This past week I received a new copy of The Sun Magazine and there was a wonderful interview with Barbara Fredrickson who studies love. “Fredrickson has a BA in psychology from Carleton College and a PhD in psychology from Stanford University. She trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the psychophysiology lab of the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Psychology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her first book, Positivity, describes two decades of her research on how positive emotions support “human flourishing”…” She is the current Director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab. Her latest book is entitled, Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do, and Become.
What does this have to do with listening you may ask? Well, part of research is to collect physiological data on individuals who do a lovingkindness meditation. Since reading the interview, I have begun to adopt some of the direction of this meditation into my own practice of entering the Silence specifically applying it to each and all of my loving relationships and becoming aware of what I “hear”. Here is a part of the interviewer’s notes, “…the voice…instructed me to bring to mind someone close to me while saying silently, May this person be safe. May this person be happy. May this person be healthy. May this person live with ease.”
I hope that you are able to hear my thoughts as I send them to you.
Since my favorite spot in nature is literally my own backyard, I try to get out there as much as possible. My totems are the way that I am arranging the plants to create food and habitat. I have seen a couple of snakes and three different families of bees. My berry and ceanothus plants in full bloom are just humming. I try to get out in the morning before all of the natural world is wide awake and busy working. I have abandoned my gloves so that I may feel the dirt directly on my fingertips and really grab onto those tiny roots of unwanted specimens. It’s funny how when one invader is eradicated space is created for another to breed unfettered. I think I like who is showing up now, creating nice carpets on bare ground. Also, it’s fun to see how some of the experiments are becoming established. A vision from one’s mind’s eye a couple of years ago is now actually becoming real. I am taking pictures of the changes I see taking place but I am afraid that they aren’t really capturing the vividness of the moment.
Being a good listener this past week was great motivation to work and study on my self-expression. I managed to work on a piece that I have found daunting. I keep at it and so now I am able to see that I will finish it. Yeah!
I hope you have a wonderful and enlightening week, full of quiet conversation with your totems and allies.
I am writing this post today having missed two previous posts this week. Oops! I got a new computer and forgot my admin link. (*Sheepish grin*) We are back on board now and I am glad. It was a hectic week beginning with all sorts of celestial portends including the Full Moon. Hope you had a good week.
This Discerning Listener in me has had plenty to absorb. From the weeds that are laughing at me in my garden to the many teachers that surround me as I reach to improve my art. I hear the sounds of beginnings and endings. In addition, one of my full moon visualizations was realized but the outcome was not what I wanted. Fortunately, I heard encouraging voices around me letting me know that there will be other opportunities. It’s all good.
This next week I ask those with the goal of becoming impeccable discerning listeners to greet each day with an open heart and non-judgmental attitude. These are key attrubutes to alignment with the fifth feminine truth. See if you can come to terms with diminshing a little of your own self importance. Test it out and see what happens! Perhaps there is a worthy opponent with whom a plan of action may lead to a completely new outcome? Who knows? You may be able to create a bigger space inside of your being and your higher self will thank you for it! 🙂
